Abstract

The use of ChatGPT in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) is not limited to access frequency; it also involves students' ability to operate the application, critically evaluate its responses, and verify religious information. This study examines the association between students' self-reported quality of ChatGPT use and their self-reported understanding of IRE. A cross-sectional quantitative correlational design was employed. All 57 Grade XI Electrical Power Installation Engineering students at SMK Negeri 3 Tanjungpinang were included through total sampling. Data were collected through observation, Likert-scale questionnaires, and documentation. After item analysis, the ChatGPT-use instrument contained 13 items (alpha = 0.877), while the self-reported IRE-understanding instrument contained 10 items (alpha = 0.700). Descriptive scores were 81% for the quality of ChatGPT use and 83% for self-reported IRE understanding. Pearson correlation yielded r = 0.629, p < 0.001, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.441-0.764. The two scores shared 39.6% of their variance. The finding indicates a positive association rather than a causal effect. Because both variables were measured by self-report at the same time, the result may be affected by common-method bias and cannot be treated as evidence of objective IRE mastery. The study's contribution is to frame ChatGPT use in IRE as responsible AI literacy that requires source verification and teacher guidance.
