Abstract

This community service program was motivated by the weak mastery of basic literacy and numeracy skills among elementary school students, as well as the difficulty faced by upper-grade students in understanding core subjects in the Griya Lestari Housing Complex, Tanjungpinang. This activity aimed to improve students' reading, writing, and arithmetic (calistung) skills, deepen their understanding of Indonesian Language, Mathematics, and Science, and strengthen character and religious education through a Service Learning approach. The program was carried out by 6 lecturers and 35 students of the PGMI Study Program of IAI Miftahul Ulum Tanjungpinang, in collaboration with the caretakers of Surau Baitul Jannah, involving 39 students from kindergarten to sixth grade over 15 sessions from October 2025 to January 2026, every Saturday from 09.00–11.00 WIB. The method included needs identification, contextual material development, weekly tutoring implementation, and evaluation through pre-test and post-test. The evaluation results showed a consistent increase in average scores for all participants: reading scores rose from 64.13 to 84.62 (gain of 20.49 points), writing from 65.56 to 87.10 (gain of 21.54 points), and arithmetic from 61.64 to 85.62 (gain of 23.97 points), with no cases of score decline found. The program also increased parental involvement and strengthened the function of the surau as a community-based non-formal education center. It is concluded that a contextual, enjoyable, and sustained learning approach effectively improves elementary students' basic literacy and numeracy competencies outside formal schooling.
